![]() ![]() In recent years the DiRT series has split into two halves, with the DiRT Rally (DiRT Rally and DiRT Rally 2.0) spin-off games being focused on realistically depicting rally and rallycross while the main DiRT series (DiRT 4 and now DiRT 5) has been a more casual experience. TLDR: dirt 4 is a rally racing game where you race down tiny dirt roads, and I love it because I don’t have to bother with anything except enjoying the feeling and thrill of driving.DiRT 5 is the latest in a long line of Codemasters’ produced rally games that can trace its lineage back to the Colin McRae Rally series.ĭespite that, DiRT 5 has very little in common with those games and isn’t even a rally game, it would be more accurate to describe it as an off-road racing game as conventional rallying isn’t really represented. It doesn’t feel like I own a car if it’s not in an open world racing game like horizon anyway. You can just use cars offered by sponsors, and never have to think about any of that stuff. You also need to manage your staff if you want to drive cars you own, and spend money on facilities such as a lounge area to give your team a space to relax so they will be less likely to develop negative traits… I’ve never had a reason to turn off the auto fix assist, and never really noticed a part breaking affecting my driving. You can spend money to upgrade cars, but it doesn’t make them go faster, it just makes their parts more durable and less likely to break. ![]() If you use a car you own, you keep more of the money you win, and you get to drive a car with your own livery on it, that you made in the very limited customization menu. ![]() The whole system of buying cars or even thinking about money is completely optional, too. (Hilariously, the lowest ai difficulty setting is competent, which makes it feel like a videogame equivalent of putting a smaller number on a bigger pair of pants so you don’t feel fat.) As long as I have a performance I’m happy with that felt good, I’m basically guaranteed to have come in first, and that’s what I want. You can just turn the difficulty down, no need for me to try the same stage over if I get a position I don’t like. It’s just me enjoying the feeling of nearly sliding off the road or losing control, but managing to save it. It’s thrilling and scary to race in the rain at night. It’s just you being brave and driving fast down these tiny roads, nothing else. There’s no one else on the track at the same time as you. It’s always sprint races, no driving in circles. So that’s why I really like dirt 4! It’s not big wide boring paved fancy racetracks, it’s small dirt roads. I really just like the feeling of go fast and slide around corners. ![]() I also don’t enjoy competing for position with other racers, or worrying about my time and trying an old track again to get a better time. Sim racers especially, I sampled forza Motorsport and didn’t enjoy going around and around on fancy racetracks. I feel like I’m competent at racing games from playing a lot of forza horizon 1 while listening to podcasts, but I don’t think I’ve ever really been into them. ![]()
